Recent changes due to Covid-19

Posted on July 1st, 2020 by Rachel Jackson

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on both the retail and charity sectors.

As a charity that aims to help good causes by distributing commissions received through online shopping, the Corona Virus has greatly affected TheGivingMachine’s income and therefore the donations we’ve been able to send out. Our charity’s aims have not changed, however, in order for us to make sure we can keep the ‘Machine’ running and therefore continue to help as many charities as possible, we have made the decision to change what we are currently giving away. We will continue to give away over 50% of the commission we receive and the new Daily Bonus Donation allows all Givers to raise a donation every day for their chosen causes without making an online purchase.

Summary of recent changes

  • The COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant impact on shopping habits and the commissions possible from retailers hit TheGivingMachine’s income and donation streams hard in April, May 2020 onwards. The TGM Team took the reluctant decision to retain Gift Aid claimed in March 2020 to provide emergency funding.
  • Because we have forecast a continued reduction in online sales commissions and donations generated, we have revised the overall % shared going forward. We now give away a standard 50% and up to 60% of the commission if we can claim Gift Aid.  However, we will review the situation towards the end of 2020 in case we need to fully retain the Gift Aid claimed again.
  • Either way, we know our lovely audience knows that a minimum of 50% of commission is given away and we are also providing valuable daily bonus donations to help people continue giving for free even during these tough times.
