7th Newark Scout Group - February's Cause of the Month

7th Newark Scout Group was established in 1929 making us the 2nd oldest group in Newark. We have over 75 members that access Beavers (6-8 years old), Cubs (8-10.5 years old) and Scouts (10.5-14 years old).  Scouting relies completely on volunteers including leaders, helpers and the Group Executive Committee.  Without these volunteers we would not be able to provide activities to develop new skills and experiences. As well as weekly meetings, members of the group also support within the community, take visits out, have developed links with the local park and attend camps- both locally and internationally.

We are situated in the centre of Newark and are luckily enough to own our building, which has been our headquarters since 1980. The hall is also used by various community groups including Slimming World, Card making group and Flower Arranging classes. These regular bookings contribute greatly to our groups finances, but the hall urgently needs modernising. To enable this we need to raise £30,000 to make improvements to the roof, which has tiles missing; the carpark, which is full of potholes; The floor of the main hall, which is uneven, needs to be replaced and strip lighting in the same room also needs updating and to modernise an outdated kitchen.

The Giving Machine is invaluable in generating much needed donations for our group. What we like about it is that it is easy to set up and anybody can support a charity while online shopping, so it’s win win for the charity and the shopper. We are grateful as through the Giving Machine we have raised £2,000 towards our total.

‘Scouting provides a second family to lots of young people. It’s a safe place where they can aspire and grow.’ Bear Grylls, Chief Scout.
