PSC Support is the only UK charity dedicated solely to improving the lives of people affected by primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
What is primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)?
PSC is a rare, immune-mediated liver disease that can affect anyone at any age, including children. At the moment, there is no cure for PSC. This means that there is nothing that can slow down or halt the progression of the disease.
People with PSC live with daily symptoms that are invisible, such as fatigue, itch, nausea and pain. They also face an increased risk of bile duct cancer, gallbladder cancer, liver cancer, and in some cases, bowel cancer. In some people living with PSC, the liver becomes so damaged over time that it stops working properly, or they get repeated, uncontrollable bile duct infections meaning that a life-saving liver transplant is needed. Even then, PSC returns in around a third of patients.
It is a complex and unpredictable disease and this means that people living with PSC are often dealing with a huge emotional burden as well as a physical one.
