The Sparkle Appeal There are more than 1200 children with disabilities living in Newport, South Monmouthshire and South Torfaen. A number of years ago the local NHS, parents and stakeholders identified the need to move current services for children with disabilities and developmental problems living in the existing Eveswell Children's Centre in Newport to a more suitable centre. South Gwent Children Foundation's, The Sparkle Appeal was established to undertake a major £3M fundraising campaign to facilitate the development of a new centre. In 2001, a site at High Cross was donated and the Foundation subsequently approached the First Minister with a view to securing a contribution from the Welsh Assembly Government to enhance and support its fundraising activities from major donors. An NHS bid for funding supported by Newport Monmouthshire and Torfaen Local Health Board and South Gwent Children Foundation was approved in May 2008 and these funds will be used to pay for the building and the core facilities it will be providing. The centre opening is in site but The Sparkle Appeal still have a new target of £1.5M to equip the family facilities and gardens and leisure areas.
